Reformed Books in Brazil

We received this request from Carlos in Brazil....

“Well, here in Brazil we have just a little of the reformed literature translated. The only ones systematic theologies we have are Charles Hodge’s Systematic Theology (but ill translated, they didn’t translate the latin, dutch, german and etc quotations), Berkhof’s and Grudem’s.

As regarding commentaries, we have: William Hendriksen’s commentaries, Lloyd-Jones sermons on Romans, Ephesians, John 17, Psalm 73 and addresses on Puritan Conferences, Calvin’s commentaries on Romans, Galatians, Ephesians, 1 and 2 Timothy, Titus and Philemon and his Institutes and John Murray’s commentary on Romans.

But beyond problems with lack of reformed literature, we have problems with book prices!

Here in Brazil books are very expensive, and it’s because of it that I have learned English in order to read and buy books outside Brazil.

Just in order to give an example: With the whole price to be paid for William Hendriksen’s commentaries here in Brazil, I can buy 2 whole set of Hendriksen’s Commentaries in English, already including shipping costs by airmail, to Brazil!!

We have none of the commentaries recommended by C.H. Spurgeon on his “Lectures to my Students” translated into Portuguese. We have no good or reformed commentary on the whole Old Testament, none of the commentaries on the Geneva Series by Banner of Truth translated, not even commentaries on the Westminster Shorter Catechism, Westminster Larger Catechism and Heidelberg Catechism! We have none of the puritan works translated, unless 3 abridged versions of John Owen’s paperbacks.

Any help will be welcome, Michael.

We are a small reformed congregation (trying to become a church soon.

Our name is Igreja Presbiteriana Reformada em Recife, in Recife (Pernambuco state capital city), we are Presbyterian and the most of our theological seminaries have declined theologically, some liberals, some unorthodox.

We have plans to establish Christian schools, a reformed seminary, to plant another churches on surrounding states (Piauí, Sergipe, Alagoas, Maranhão) to spread our reformed and biblical faith.

Thanks very much!
